After Mencap released this video OkCupid has finally said they will delete the derogatory question. Campaigners with a learning disability are calling for OkCupid to meet with them and work together to make OkCupid accessible for all. Campaigners have spoken out at their joy and relief that the question has been finally removed, however they have pointed out that OkCupid has failed to speak directly to campaigners with a learning disability or at any point apologised for the harm caused to people with a learning disability.
Mencap is urging OkCupid to meet with campaigners with a learning disability and work together to ensure that OkCupid is open and welcoming to people from all backgrounds. But it was a bad and good moment, I am worried that even now OkCupid has never spoken directly to campaigners with a learning disability, answered our questions or said sorry for the harm this question has caused. It makes me worry that OkCupid is just offering to delete the question to shut us up, rather than because they understand our concerns.
I hope that this is the first step on Mencap and OkCupid working together to make OkCupid open to people from all backgrounds, because everyone deserves the chance to find love, including people with a learning disability. We are very pleased to see that Ok Cupid has finally agreed to delete this discriminatory question.

The charity called for the controversial question to be immediately removed from OkCupid’s website. Amy Clarke, a Mencap spokesperson who also has a learning difficulty, said: “I am very upset that OkCupid could ask a question about whether people with a disability should be allowed to have children. An exhaustive study of people from primary school to middle age has proved that clever men are much more likely to marry than those with lesser intelligence. But for female high-flyers, the reverse is true. Their chances of walking up the aisle are considerably lower than those of classmates who left school at When Nicola Horlick, the City investment manager nicknamed Superwoman for juggling her job and family of six, wrote her book on career and domestic bliss, its title posed the question: Can You Have It All?
The answer, it appears, is yes? The study, based on men and women, measured their IQ at the age of 11 then revisited them 40 years later to find out whether they had ever married. Academics at the four British universities who carried out the survey said the schoolgirls with high IQs later witnessed a dramatic decline in their marriage prospects. But the brighter schoolboys found it easier to find a bride. The results are borne out by evidence from psychologists that successful career women are struggling to find “interesting men” who are interested in them.
Relationship experts say professional men prefer to marry women “like their mum” who will provide the domestic support while they go out to work. Women achievers, however, find it difficult to find men willing to sacrifice their careers to become house husbands. The results may explain why a sharp-witted man like Vic Reeves, 45, the comedian, appears to have found wedded bliss with Nancy Sorrell, 30? Conversely, Horlick, 44, has separated from her husband Tim.

First piloted as an experiment to reduce dental cavities in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in , fluoridated drinking water has since been hailed by the U. Now, a controversial new study links fluoridation to lower IQ in young children, especially boys whose mothers drank fluoridated water while pregnant. Longtime fluoridation critics are lauding the study, but other researchers say it suffers from numerous flaws that undercut its credibility.
Fluoride is well-known for protecting teeth against cavities by strengthening tooth enamel. Yet skepticism has dogged the practice for as long as it has existed. Some have blamed fluoridated water for a wide range of illnesses including cancer, but most criticism has been dismissed as pseudoscience. Over the years, though, a small number of scientists have published meta-analyses casting doubt on the efficacy of water fluoridation in preventing cavities.
More recently, scientists have published small-scale studies that appear to link prenatal fluoride exposure to lower IQ , although dental research groups were quick to challenge them.

They also argue that those with high intelligence, the “cognitive elite”, are becoming separated from those of average and below-average intelligence. The book was and remains highly controversial, especially where the authors discussed purported connections between race and intelligence and suggested policy implications based on these purported connections. Shortly after its publication, many people rallied both in criticism and in defense of the book.
A number of critical texts were written in response to it. The Bell Curve , published in , was written by Richard Herrnstein and Charles Murray to explain the variations in intelligence in American society, warn of some consequences of that variation, and propose social policies for mitigating the worst of the consequences.
