At Aussie Books for Zim ABZ we collect new and gently used books, stationery and library furnishings and ship them to Zimbabwe to set up libraries in rural disadvantaged communities. We seek to improve literacy in disadvantaged communities—to empower children with knowledge and the confidence to help shape the world they live in. The idea for the project emerged after the founder, Dr Alfred Chidembo, saw how many books were discarded annually in Australia. Zimbabwe gets the books—a gift that keeps on giving—and Australia has a little less landfill.
This means we must keep financial records that correctly record all donations and enable true and fair financial statements to be prepared and to be audited, if required. Please choose your donation amount, then click continue.

The Home Office faces a series of legal challenges over its decision to allow Zimbabwean government officials to interview people from the country who are seeking asylum in the UK. The government was criticised earlier this year for working with the Zimbabwean state to accelerate the removal of asylum seekers after Robert Mugabe was forced from power, despite continuing human rights abuses in the country.
Zimbabweans seeking asylum in the UK, who fear persecution by the new government, were asked to attend Home Office centres across the UK, only to find officials from the governement in Harare waiting to question them. Lawyers acting on behalf of one of the applicants, Chishamiso Mkundi, 51, applied for a judicial review after his asylum claim was rejected. Their claims were often rejected on the basis that they were not of sufficiently high profile to come to the attention of the Zimbabwe authorities and thus risk being mistreated on their return.
Earlier this year, the high court granted permission for judicial review in a case of another asylum seeker, AG, who challenged the Home Office practice of interviewing asylum seekers whose claims had been rejected, and sharing their information with Zimbabwean government officials. A date for a hearing has been set in February.
Zimbabweans living in the UK told the Guardian earlier this year that the interviews with officials had left them nervous and unable to sleep.
The Awards will be held at the beautiful Hilton Hotel Adelaide. The Zimbabwean community Down Under, as Australia is commonly known, has grown over the years; with many venturing and excelling in different economic fields like in other countries such as the UK, USA and South Africa where Zimbabwean communities have traditionally settled. Interestingly Australia has seen a growing number of Zimbabweans moving to settle there for various reasons, with some individuals having been in that country for decades and doing very well.
The Zimbabwe Achievers Awards is held in countries where there is a sizable community of nationals from the southern African country. The global event has become the epitome of excellence among Zimbabweans who have chosen to live outside their home country, like many other diaspora communities from across the globe.

Zimbabweans have migrated to Australia quite steadily over the past few decades. Those that arrived during the 20th century were mostly white Zimbabweans of British ancestry. However, ongoing economic difficulty has prompted higher migration in recent years. The census revealed that most Zimbabweans have arrived since This influx of migration has included increasing numbers of native Zimbabweans, mostly seeking a better economic or educational advantage.
It is important to recognise that the Zimbabweans migrating to Australia are generally from a privileged, urbanised and educated demographic of their country.

WHEN I landed in Perth, Australia back in with my wife and two young children from Harare, we were so happy to start a new life in a new country. My wife and I were both graduates from the University of Zimbabwe but realized that for us to be successful we needed to go back to school and earn Australian qualifications. But, as parents with two young kids, it was not financially feasible for both of us to study at the same time.
As a focused and loving man I opted that my wife be the first one to attend university and study pharmacy while I worked multiple menial jobs to support the family. For those in the Diaspora, I did it all; wiping of bums included.

According to the United Nations Convention and Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees also called the Refugee Convention , a refugee is someone who is outside their own country and cannot return due to a well-founded fear of persecution because of their:. A person becomes a refugee under international law once she or he crosses an international border and is assessed as meeting the definition of a refugee, either by a national government or an international agency such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees UNHCR.
In popular use, the term refugee is often interpreted more broadly than its legal definition to include all people who flee their homes seeking refuge from harm. There are many circumstances which could force someone to flee to safety, including war or civil strife, domestic violence, poverty and natural or man-made disasters. However, the Refugee Convention only recognises people as refugees if they are displaced from their home country because of persecution on the basis of their race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion.
Refugees are not in the same situation as migrants, although the two groups are often confused. Migrants choose when to leave their country, where they go and when they return. Refugees flee their country for their own safety and cannot return unless the situation that forced them to leave improves.

There is a general perception that there is no film industry to talk about in Zimbabwe. Based on my study of the Zimbabwean film industry I disagree with this view.
There are, nevertheless, efforts at the grassroots, of various informally constituted cottage industries producing video-film products.
Follow our live coverage for the latest news on the coronavirus pandemic. Cricket Australia has indefinitely postponed its home limited-overs series against Zimbabwe due to the coronavirus pandemic. Cricket Australia CA cited the short length of the series, the “significant” biosecurity measures that would need to be in place and the risk to the health and safety of participants as key factors in the postponement of the tour. The matches were scheduled for August 9, 12 and 15, although only the final fixture had a confirmed venue, in Townsville.
Zimbabwe’s home limited-overs series against Ireland in April was also postponed. Acting Zimbabwe Cricket boss Givemore Makoni said postponing the tour was “the only option”. The next series on the Australia men’s team calendar is a three-match T20 series against West Indies, set to begin on October 4 in Townsville as a warm-up for the T20 World Cup. However, Australian coach Justin Langer said earlier this month he hoped a limited-overs tour of England could be arranged for September.
West Indies are currently in England preparing to play a three-Test series that is set to begin on July 8, behind closed doors at Southampton’s Rose Bowl, before playing back-to-back Tests at Old Trafford.
